Periodontics: Tips for Healthier Gums

Periodontics focuses on gum health. Keeping your gums healthy is the main goal of every treatment. Detecting any problem early leads to early treatment. You can also do your part in caring for your gums. Here are some tips from dental professionals who work in periodontics on how to have healthier gums.

Eat gum-friendly snacks

Bad bacteria in the mouth thrive on sugary foods and drinks. These organisms damage teeth significantly if an individual does not remove the sugars from their teeth right away. The dental damage can reach the gums later. Eating gum-friendly foods instead will yield stronger, healthier gums. Periodontics recommends dairy products, vegetables, and fresh fruits for snacking.

Floss once daily

This practice can help remove the food particles and plaque in areas of the dental arch that a toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing can happen in the morning, afternoon, or evening. An individual can even floss while watching television. Gums will reap the benefits of flossing each time.

Drink more water

Hydration triggers the production of saliva, which is a natural fluid capable of balancing the growth of bacteria in the mouth. It can maintain the mouth’s basic environment. Drinking more water can help neutralize the bacterial acids in the mouth after eating or drinking. The same happens when one rinses the mouth with water after drinking or eating something sweet.

Drink seven to eight glasses of water every day. This allows the body to produce a good amount of saliva in the mouth. Increasing one’s water intake also does the body good. It helps the body function well and fight off gum infections.

Quit or avoid consuming tobacco

Research reveals that tobacco is a substance that can impair proper blood oxygenation. This can prevent the gum tissue from receiving enough blood for tissue repair and cell regeneration. CDC reports that smoking weakens the body’s immune system. This makes it more difficult to fight gum infection.

Have regular professional dental cleanings

Periodontics encourages people to get regular checkups. These appointments enable the dentist to detect the early signs of gum disease while cleaning the teeth. The patient can then receive early treatments. Regular professional dental cleaning removes plaque and tartar. This is an effective way to keep one’s gums healthy. Research shows that these cleanings, along with daily oral care, can also reverse gingivitis signs and symptoms.

Use fluoride toothpaste

Many brands of toothpaste promise whiter teeth, fresher breath, and less gingivitis. Studies reveal that the ideal toothpaste is the one that has fluoride. This element can strengthen the enamel and protect the teeth from bacterial acids. Dentists who practice periodontics recommend fluoride toothpaste to protect the teeth. That way, the gums stay healthy as well.

Brush the teeth properly

Brushing the right way targets the teeth and gums. This dental care practice should be a staple way to care for oral health, even if one is busy or tired. Periodontics stresses the importance of correct brushing techniques. Below are some reminders:

  • Using a soft-bristled or medium-bristled toothbrush
  • Clean the teeth for two minutes at least two times a day
  • Hold the toothbrush along the gumline’s edge
  • Replace the toothbrush every two to three months
  • Always brush the tongue and hard palate

Periodontics helps you gain better gum health by caring for your whole mouth

Studies show that gum health and tooth health have a strong connection. That is why periodontics stresses the importance of keeping teeth healthy. Strong, infection-free teeth help you gain healthy gums. Working with your dentist can make your journey to healthy gums pleasant.
